Livestock keeping
Livestock keeping is the second most important economic activity after agriculture. More than 40% of the population is engaged in livestock keeping as means of subsistence, 221,402 cattle, 97,948 goats and 52,455 sheep are the animals kept for meat, milk, hide and skins.
Small scale livestock keeping in the district is done both as a source of food and supplementary income. Cattle with 43.1 percent of total livestock in the district was the most populated livestock, followed by poultry (27.4 percent), goats (19.1 percent), sheep (10.2 percent), donkeys (0.2 percent) and pigs (0.1 percent) was the least populated livestock.
